Sports Meeting with Babe McCarthy

Another sports meeting in the early 50s, I would guess. There are many recognized players from both football and basketball teams. Possibly could be some baseball players there, also. It seems to be under the control of Babe McCarthy and two others in the center (wearing ties).

Among others, I have recognized one of the Garretts, Paul Hamblin, Billy McGee, Babe, Hick Miller, Big Apple Tapp, Phil Gorden, Dayton Mink, Frank Kirk, Bernis Tapp, Hoyle Penna, William Leonard Davis, Bobby Grisham, and others whose names I can't recall.

Wonder what this was about? And when?

  1. Carl, I can tell you are not feeling well today. Where did all this extra scrip, etc. come from? Get better, I miss you being on the computer. Wallis called today and says he will be starting back SOUTH in a few days. He is not stopping by here for the weekend after all but is going on straight back to Foley. Three weeks of vacation is a little more than a holiday, but I could stand it.You go W.O.

  2. That's Bobby Grisham standing to the right of William Leonard. Which one is Frank Kirk? Small world story: Frank and my future husband met on board a ship in the Mediterranean when they were in the Navy. He recognized my picture that John had.

  3. Ralph Kesler beside Zeke Garrett on left, with sports coat.

  4. L R Burcham to left of Ralph. Must be all sports banquet judging from the number of students. I believe that Babe coached football at one time as well as basketball. Who is the other coach?

  5. Jo Carolyn, Frank Kirk is the third one to the left from William Leonard Davis (as you look at the photo), near the flag.

  6. That rather odd floral centerpiece in front of Babe has something that could be goal posts at either end. And the tall candles are Christmas themed - yule logs and greenery. Not to mention the huge steaks getting cold on the plates while everyone is posing for the photo!

  8. Bobby Grisham was a really outstanding running back up until he injured his leg working for Johns Manville up north before his senior year - the best back of all we played that year running wild over Booneville. He retired as a school teacher in West Memphis a few years back and is now deceased.

  10. I can help with the "Kesler" individual, its my uncle Richard, not Ralph. They settled in Little Rock Ark. Some of you may remember that by reason of a freak accident, Ralph died last year. Richard married Sue Parton and Ralph married Vivian, Sues' sister.
Richard and Sue are still in Little Rock and he speaks often of Hickman Miller and Tremon Miller, Big Apple Tapp and all the rest--

  12. "Zactly how many Garretts were there? Mose, Zeke, Ray, Clint, seems there were at least two more, all excellent sports athletes as best as I recall.
I couldn't keep them separted even back then. Hope they are all well.

  14. Remember Jerry Clower from Yazoo City? His humorous football stories mention Butch Lambert many times!

  15. Butch Lambert was a sports legend in his own right. He began as head football coach and Athletic Director at Itawamba Junior College in 1950.

He was a highly respected SEC line judge for 30 years and a basketball referee for 21 years. His most famous call was in the 1978 Gator Bowl when Ohio State coach Woody Hayes hit an opposing Clemson player on the sidelines, effectively ending his (Hayes) career.

He was also Personnel Manager at Rockwell (Delta) Mfg. in the late 60's where my wife Gloria worked for him several years.
