Some Highlights from 1955

  1. Actually JMD, Johnny Jack and Bobby Mc were the man and I don't know why Doc sent me out to get the trophy but I won't tell anybody if you don't. A couple of hundred years on the Internet, my legend will grow and nobody will know.

I don't know where Betty finds all this stuff but I enjoy looking at it.

  2. Joe, I saved all this from high school. I'm glad you are enjoying it. I sent another picture of you making a lay up and Johnny running for the rebound but you did not miss the shot.

  4. Melvin, some of our most cherished memories are from when we were growing up with you on West Main Street; climbing the trees in your backyard (we were Baldwyn's original tomboys), playing baseball, roller skating and going to the movies on Saturday afternoons. There was even a picnic and a fishing pole or two.
We remember when you called yourself "Pud", and the time you accidentally signed your name "Melvin Duck" on a class paper. And what about the time you helped your mom serve dinner and the plate of cornbread went flying across the room? Sometimes you don't need photos to revive memories, just a picture in your mind. Your childhood buddies, Betty and Cynthia

  5. A touching tribute to Melvin and 1950's West Main St Baldwyn. JMD is still a live wire.

After looking closer at the trophy photo, my memory has been jogged and, Betty, I'm sure that Johnny Jack will remember this the same as me. This is the game where we played Booneville in the finals and were down 4 points with about 10 seconds left to play and I took the ball down court ending with a behind the back left to right dribble follwed by right to left between the legs move and a left handed reverse layup, then stole the inbound pass and hit a fall away jumper with the clock down to zero to tie the game, then scored 12 points in overtime to seal the victory with a resounding dunk over George Samuel Oakley. That is about all I can remember.

  6. Joe, my memory of that last 10 seconds in Algoma was a big influence in our decision to settle here 2 1/2 years ago....when we moved here, the old gym was still standing....partially....the roof had collapsed...it has since been torn down to make room for our NEW ALGOMA CITY HALL....I've saved you a brick from the old building...

  12. Melvin, I Googled "Pud" and guess what? He was the icon for Fleer's Dubble Bubble. Remember the comics that were wrapped around the gum and featured the kid wearing a cap? That was Pud.

  13. Cynthia, you stole my thunder. That was the only place I ever saw a cartoon character named Pud.
