Summer Swimming Party

Above are some photos sent by Carolyn (Wheeler) Ghys. Carolyn attended BHS and lived on Caldwell Circle from 1957-1960. She later attended school in Corinth and Evangel College in Springfield, MO.

While living in Baldwyn, her father Tom was part owner of the old LeeAnn Truck Stop.

The photos shown here are of an outing with some folks including Charles Weatherford, Peggy Jo Jones, and Vicky Greenwood. The other girl is from Tupelo and name forgotten. The swimming pool appears to be the Booneville pool. The cannon could be from the Crossroads or Shiloh??

Carolyn thinks she got a good education from the great teachers at BHS. "When I got to college, I got very good grades in English after having had Mrs. Martin for my English Lit teacher".

Thanks for the photos, Carolyn, and welcome to the Baldwyn memories group.

  1. Yes carl Mrs. Martin was a good one; they don't make them like her any more. She was a product of good breeding, class, manners, education and the utmost desire to help her fellow man. Mrs. Quanta Vandiver, and Mrs. Clanton Sansom also those qualities. We were certainly blessed to have such good teachers.

  2. Reading posts about Mrs Martin makes me believe that she made everyone feel that they had a special relationship with her.

  5. Agree... that sure looks like the booneville swimming pool. The shed in the background was there for a long time after the pool was redone.

  8. The girl standing next to Peggy Jo is a Judy alright but it's Judy Bryant not Judy Prather. Judie Prather is a year younger than me and Judy Bryant was a few years older than me.

  10. Judy Prather would have been 12 or 13 at the time this picture was taken. Sorry, but it's not her.

  11. Milton--look in your 1960 yearbook-when Judy Prather was posing a president of 8th grade & THEN reconsider your comment-Judy was a really sweet & pretty girl(still is)--but advanced for her age - even at age 13!!!

  12. Anon, I certainly have no quarrel with your assessment of Judy. She and her daughter Julie have been good friends of mine for quite a few years.
I should have mentioned that I also thought it was her at first. But after blowing the picture up I decided it wasn't.
The photo had to have been taken in the summer of 58 or 59. Remember Carolyn Wheeler was not here in the Summer of 60.
    I'm open to discussion. mc

  14. Both lived in Baldwyn or Booneville (Wyatt) most of their adult life and still there. Wyatt is retired school teacher, now in Baldwyn, and Charles was a house painter.

  15. Milton--look back at 1959 album-u were a junior--check out the 7th grade girls-those young ladies who lived in town & frequented the pool were TOUGH -remember Linda Weatherford? Judy Skelton? Nan Rowan? Virginia McDonald? just to name a FEW--that was a shorenuff class of Beauties--even for 12yr olds-OH those good old days-ha

  16. Ah yes, the days before Latimer Park. Booneville City Park was the place to be on those hot Summer days. My 57 Chevy would be loaded down with Baldwyn kids and we would dare Mr. Duggar to catch us on our way up. He almost did once! I even did a few stints as life guard to defray the cost of the pool entry fee and a coke or two. And a round of miniature golf was always fun.
Now, if we can get Judy to tell us if she is in the picture....

  17. I saw Judy Prather at my granddaughter, Landon's, graduation at Ole Miss. Judy was one of her teachers. Also Judy and her husband came to Landon's wedding and reception and they were the best dancers on the floor - doing the bop! Judy still resembles that old photo.
