Top: More high school beauties, these from Guntown, but also known well in Baldwyn.
Second from top: kids at the old downtown school before it burned. The sandy haired boy in the foreground we think is Bobby Grisham. Can you recognize any others? Maybe Hoyle Penna, second from left, rear??
Third: The old tabernacle and boy scout hut in 1942 or '43. The scout hut, as shown at this time, is a school cafeteria after the fire destroyed the school building. It was brought by rail from Camp Shelby and reassembled. The burned out remains of the school can be seen at the right. After the fire, the tabernacle was divided into sections and used for classrooms for a while.
A large playground remained there for many years (see-saws, swings, etc) until removal to make way for the new Caldwell Hospital completed in 1950.
Lower: Darrell "Dog" Mathis.

______________
The "downtown" school on west main street across the Baptist church. It and the tabernacle took up the entire block. Oh, and three outhouses!
The schoolhouse on north second street was built in 1929 and faced second street (then Highway 45). It burned in 1939 and was rebuilt facing the new highway 45 to the west. The 1942 tornado damaged it enough to almost completely needing another rebuild. It remained in operation until 1991 when it was burned and destroyed completely by a student.
I see on the blog obits that Darrell died. What happened, if anyone knows? seems strange that he died young.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I look at the list of Bearcat deceased, I wonder why so many of our friends died so young.
ReplyDeleteI have the email addresses of the Malone girls. I'll send them an email so maybe they'll come on here and look around.
ReplyDeleteABOUT DARRELL-- HE COULD RIDE HIS BIKE BACKWARDS SITTING ON THE HANDLE BARS, AND AS I THINK ABOUT IT -- JIMMY RUTHERFORD DID ALSO -- IT WAS A REAL TREAT TO SEE IT-- DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER THIS?
ReplyDeleteJMD
I remember it JMD, both would ride all over town on their handle bars backwards... I also remember that Darrell had a gang of us younger kids the he would tell to attack. There were about 8 to 10 of us. We would attack the larger boys like a swarm of bees. I think that JB finally told him to cut it out. A lot more to that story but for another time. Jim G
ReplyDeleteJMD, I also remember going to a Ham fest in Memphis in your 1959 Chevy. I think it was Lanny, Herb, David, you and myself. I bought a pair of needle nose pliers there and I still have them. Remember we were chased by another group of boys in an older car for most of the way. Strange how this blog brings up old memories that had been forgotten.
