Old Jericho school with the 5th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Exact date unknown. Maxine Heflin (not pictured) was their teacher.

Students not identified, but maybe someone will recognize a friend or relative.

1944 Eaglewood School Class

Carl, this is a rather special picture for me. My mom is Sarah Copeland, seated to the right of Hoyle Palmer, the only male in the class.

This is the entire 1944 Eaglewood School class. Eaglewood was located between Brice's Crossroads and Highway 30 and slightly west of the current road. The building is gone but the site is still there and we located it last spring.

My Mom would be pleased if you posted this one.

The names are all maiden names written on the back of the photo. Front row L to R is Marie Steele, Edith Owens, Hoyle Palmer, Sarah Copeland (Miller), Maxine McGee and in back is Cynthia Bula and teacher Mrs. C. E. Patch.

TOP: Boy Scouts from Troop 33, Baldwyn preparing for a long truck ride to a campout, I believe at Camp Yocona. David Gentry on fender; L-R Wallis Nelson and Herb Spivey, Grover Thomas, Tom Shellnut, Win Johnson and his dad, Scoutmaster Edwin Johnson. In truck is John Allen Lampkin behind Larry Johnson (tipping hat), Henry Outlaw, Ted Love, Charles Weatherford, and Phil Gorden. M. Gorden was lending the company truck.

CENTER: Clockwise - Rachel Christian, Opal Stovall, Carl Houston, and Becky Christian(?). I believe that is correct, and that was made about 1951-52. Need an ID on the toddler in front of Rachel and any correction if these are wrong, please.

Photo made looking North on West Main street, now Ripley Road. It appears to be near the Easter season and baskets with eggs are being held by some.

BOTTOM: Carl Houston (left) and Arch (Duke A.) Young pre-flight checking the Young's 1947 Cessna 140. Made at the South end of the old grass airstrip looking East.

It is (and I guess, was) a felony to use an aircraft for illegal acts, but we didn't realize that while using it to fly around Twenty-mile canal finding watermelon patches to raid at night and to map out the best getaway roads....

We didn't do that now, did we, guys?

Top: Sandra Putt?, Ellen Mink, and ??? - Another good example of true southern belles. Date of photo is on right.

Center: This appears to be James Bryant crowning either Linda Johnson or Monte Caldwell at a football game, assisted by Wallis Nelson. There is a distortion in the photo. Girl holding flowers unknown - head not visible (I think)... study it closely and tell us what you think.

Lower photo is of Maxine in action. What a basketball player she was! One of many others at BHS, however.

Some Highlights from 1955

THe B.H.S. Spotlight

One of the most anticipated events of the week was the Thursday morning local publication and on the last inside page, the 'spotlight'.

Cars stopped in front of the post office and kids ran in to get the paper on those days. They were usually reading it on the run going back to the car for the trip to school.

As shown in the top photo, it had pertinent information on students that was noteworthy.

The most important thing it seems, however, was the "snooper" column on what was happening on the dating scene. Snooper, aka "sniper snooper" was never identified until the end of the school year and then had some couples approaching him or her asking for clarification on some of the reporting.

Top: More high school beauties, these from Guntown, but also known well in Baldwyn.

Second from top: kids at the old downtown school before it burned. The sandy haired boy in the foreground we think is Bobby Grisham. Can you recognize any others? Maybe Hoyle Penna, second from left, rear??

Third: The old tabernacle and boy scout hut in 1942 or '43. The scout hut, as shown at this time, is a school cafeteria after the fire destroyed the school building. It was brought by rail from Camp Shelby and reassembled. The burned out remains of the school can be seen at the right. After the fire, the tabernacle was divided into sections and used for classrooms for a while.

A large playground remained there for many years (see-saws, swings, etc) until removal to make way for the new Caldwell Hospital completed in 1950.

Parlor Courting

Boys and their dates would have a lot of fun at get-togethers at one's home years ago. One excuse to invite kids over was that you might have at least one new "hot" record to play on the portable 45/78 machine. Shown enjoying an evening together (upper photo) is Billy Short, Jo Carolyn Anderson, Bobby Grisham, and Pat McGuire. Also shown (lower) is Jo and Pat discussing something. The time is probably about 1952. Jo remembers the Okolona trips to Wilson Park and writes:

"The pictures of the Okolona pool brought back memories of when Pat McGuire and I would go there. She always had friends who were willing chauffeurs for us. I remember riding home one night with windows down and our long hair blowing as we sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the top of our lungs. I always think of that night when I hear that song".

"Pat was the golden girl with the flaxen hair who could talk anyone into doing anything. She got me into a lot of trouble. When I was supposed to be preparing supper, she would "steal" me away from my chore. She was brave enough to wear shorts into town which was a kind of no-no in the early 50s. I was her cohort. My mother didn't think that was so cute. Going barefoot downtown was also a daring thrill. How we walked on the hot pavement, I don't know."
