Show Me The Money!

Another photo of the crowds that waited patiently for the money drawing in the center of town many years ago. The merchants gave ticket stubs to customers for the amount of money they spent up until time to roll the barrel and pick some lucky winners out.

Mayor Bernard Coggins has a winning ticket about to be called out. In the truck also is Sam Johnson, the Western Auto dealer. Around Sam you can see Robert Jobe, Charles Weatherford, and Gary Norman. By the left door of the truck stands Nora Dean Mink. ALso on the left (rear) of the barrel is Buddy Miller. In the lower left of the photo is Betty Jean Franklin.

Can you locate anyone else you remember?

    1. I thought so, too, Tom. The mustache and hat was recognizable. I think on that we agree. Thanks. Just about everyone wore a hat in those days....

  4. Well, I found my grandpa John Houston in the crowd. He won twenty bucks there once and was overjoyed.

  5. Best photo yet, Carl. Captures all the excitement of Baldwyn Saturday afternoon at that time. Could that be Marie Evans looking back at the camera at bottom center?

    1. I see the one you are referring to, Joe. Marie would be a bit younger, thinner, and probably be at work at the drug store. I thought at first look that was Clarene looking up at the ticket barrel, but she was much younger - couldn't have been over 10 when this was made. I believe that the black man just a little to the right looking back at the camera is Bud Bradley, but not sure. Thanks for the comment, my friend. Hope you all are well.

  6. Is that Willie Bell Ingram (Billy Ingram's aunt) on the left, behind the group of 4 black men?

    1. What a great picture! Those were happy days. Almost everyone was smiling...including a man who I think is my Grandpa Ricks. Can you guess what year that was?

    2. Buddy Miller looks about 10 years old, would have made it about 1953.

  7. Who is man on lower right by passenger side door looking back at camera? He looks familiar.
